Inception meaning: SPOILER ALERT

Inception-Totem-Wallpaper-1

The dream has become their reality and who are you to say otherwise?”

What a better way to start than with the ending? The totem doesnt stops but it starts shaking like it is going to fall and eventually stop. Basically at the end we dont know if they are still in a dream or not but if you dont want to keep asking yourself if they are in a dream or not for the rest of your life you will have to accept the idea the it doesnt matter.

What is real and what we feel as real are of course two separate things. The problem is that we cant be sure that something is real (Just take a look to the matrix or the brain in a vat theory) Existence is based upon to what you feel as real.  Now in the movie the “Limbo” is basically the place were you end up if you go to deep into a dream. In thiss place you wont remember that you were dreaming and this means that you loose the ability to controll the dream. If you die in the limbo you willl wake up to “reality” But this makes us wonder what if the reality is just another “limbo” were we are. We would consider this as madness and this is what happened to Mal. But not because she tought that this wasnt the real world but because she tought that this not being the real world was soemthing to worry about. At the end this life might or might not be a dream but ultimatley and in clear words why the hell would you risk to miss the opotunity of being alive to try to know if this is a dream, obviously if this is a dream at the end you always wake up so chill sit back and enjoy life.

Now inception doesnt goes very deep into explaining or talking about this and anyway it talks about it in a sci-fi version just liike Matrix. But what about a little zen philosophy?

Ex-Machina Analysis. SPOLIER ALERT

ExMachina_Payoff_hires2-2-header

This is not a sci-fi about artificial intelligence that turns against the humans and we see lots of violence and post.apoalyptic events. This movie treats topics that the Terminator movies just slightly touched in its LAST movie. Ex machina makes one reconsider of what is the meaning of being human, alive and most of all consiouss. When the Turning Test is passed it means that the line that differences machine and human cant be seen anymore, the question is: Is th eline still there? A issue in the movie is also to figure out what would be the ultimate turning test as explained during the film if the turning test had consisted in Caleb only talking to Ava and another human and trying to difference wich one is the machhine it would had been very easy for Ava to pass. Specially since she can completley look, act, talk, make facial expressions as a human. The “ultimate turning test” that Caleb proposes is to manage that the “machine” stops acting, immitating or following programmed commands and to actually be what would be described as consiouss.

Nathan onjectives were never clear as to what he would do with a AI that passes the turning test. He doesnt seem to mind the idea of the humans going extinct and he being the cause of it. And the fact that he tends to point out his actions in a “legendary” way and to in a moment describe himself as a god can give us the idea that his porpouses were more egocentric. Caleb intented to escape with Ava to the world and lock Ethan forever too bad that he ended up locked in. Ava didnt seem to plan the end of the human race. Here intentions would actually be to form part of the human life. There are three scenes that are not explained but say a lot:

  1. The last look that Ava gave to Caleb when she left the bunker. Even tough Ava was only using Caleb to escape the fact that she took a last look to him means that she actually made a bond with him and felt either sympathy or shame. Anyway taking him with her would had meant a great risk.
  2. The first “real” Avas turning test. It takes place when the helicopters arrives to pick up Caleb but finds out Ava instead. We dont know what conversation wentt off there but we know that she managed to persuade him in a human way to take her in the helicopter.
  3. Getting outside the black and white room. Thiss takes place when Ava goes into the city to a busy place in the city at that moment she joins the human society and stops being a machine that knows what it is and starts “experiencing” it.

But lets go deeper into the concept of consiousness. When we reach the point when we dont know wether a machine is  consiouss or not we also start realizing that we cant even know with other humans. Even Caleb questions his own consiouss during the movie wich drives him to cut himself to discover if he is human or not. And it goes like this because you cant be sure that other people are consiouss in the same way as you are.

Ethan said that there were two ways in wich an AI would work either it was immitating and following orders or it was consiouss. And since we cant recreate consiousness since we cant be sure that we had done it he added up a third option. that the IA wasnt aware that she is immitating. And it might sound scary but we might allready be there dont you think? The simmulation theory of course.

And if you want to have a “feelings” dose about something related to AI watch this video that will make bigger the question of: Who is in the right to decide if someone is counsiouss or not?
